Lindisfarne was beautiful.

With NZIFF coming around, i’ve started to put away the shit I normally watch on a nightly basis (see: movies that you don’t to think) in trade for a cinematic masterpiece. This evening I watched Stoker, the first English film by Park Chan Wook (Dir. of Old Boy). A little dialogue, though not much (and more for the visuals), of the film below. If you haven’t seen it, i’d perhaps not click more as it a little spoiler.
(Note. The above scene has nothing to do with the clip i’ve extracted below)
I missed out on last years New Zealand’s International Film Festival (I think I was out of the country).. so this year i’ve got a small list i’m hoping to see. Ran down yesterday morning to book all the tickets to the essentials, and i’ll wait til the day for the few that are seconds on my list. I’m excited for a few- Upstream Color (Shane Carruth, who seems to have made it single handedly by the number of times he appears in the credits), Mud (directed by the same man who made Take Shelter, my favourite film), The Bling Ring (Sofia Coppola) and so on.
I made a small list i’d recommend below (of course based on my own opinion on the director, cinematographer and trailer.. ignoring reviews that some have received).
See you there.
Ella released ‘Tennis Courts’ M/V today- i’m proud of her, and of this video in particular. Polarizing considering the audience she reaches, but this video speaks for great minds alike. Those that see eye to eye with her vision will appreciate this a lot. I know I do.
Here are a few of the film shots taken that day (and here are the other ones)
This came live today. A nice little backstory behind it too.
Took a little drive up through the new toll tunnels north with Chelsea, otherwise known as Watercolours, the other week. A morning of photos and cuddling of pups. Someday i’ll scan these 35mm negatives in properly.. until then these pitchy contrasty scans wil have to do. PS. listen to her here.
I dropped by the studio to see Ella’s new video in progress. Big chainz, black eyes, golden lox and an extravagant lighting set up. All the good things are on film (being developed), but maybe i’ll wait til the video comes out for that.
PS. Ella’s new single (see: here) came out yesterday with a little b-side too.
Ella/Lorde played her first public show on 9th of May at Galatos- It’s taken me weeks to get a few rolls of film developed, only to find most of them are a mess (my mistake for thinking I could shoot across both film and digital in a small window of opportunity). A biased opinion, but i’ll say it anyway- she was amazing, always taken back everytime I hear her sing. These photos do no justice..
It’s never easy visualizing ideas, creating a physical being from nothing. Special Problems did it well in Ella’s first music video for Royals. I can’t wait to see what’s next.. she has a brilliant mind.
you can force your story’s shape but the color will always bloom upstream ..fuck that’s a beautiful line.
Don’t judge a book by it’s cover they say.. bullshit. I’ve been watching a lot films purely on aesthetic lately, and this trailer caught my eye. Directed, written, produced, cinematography and musical score by Shane Carruth (seriously it sounds like he does everything), most well known for Looper and the mind fuck that was Primer (i’m still not sure how..what..when..why..). The most curious thing about this film is that it was shot entirely on GH2′s hacked with a number of Voigtlander lenses. Beautiful.
