Lindisfarne was beautiful.

I dropped by the studio to see Ella’s new video in progress. Big chainz, black eyes, golden lox and an extravagant lighting set up. All the good things are on film (being developed), but maybe i’ll wait til the video comes out for that.
PS. Ella’s new single (see: here) came out yesterday with a little b-side too.
For the release of the adidas Originals x Opening Ceremony collaboration, Area 51 had an opening event in their High Street store. I’m very fond of adidas and their collaborations (Kazuki, as you already know), much like the Jeremy Scott ObyO collection this is not my forte but I can see where it fits in with the kids. Free drinks, free food, and an entirely new outfit to the store- everything looked great.
I rolled a couple of 800asa films through the contax- the results are less than favourable, but here are snaps of the eve. PS. I’m looking for a new lab to process film at.. who’s got suggestions?
My last day in Seoul was one spent much hungover. Inability to really do anything but lay on the couch (because the bed had been occupied by two friends already), txting home and wondering when I should wake up to fill my stomach. That eve, after a massive shop at Muji, I met with Dahee (who had recently flew in from Mumbai), Yura and Su Ceum. Not only was this the last days for me, but Yura is on a scary but exciting solo adventure- walking from Paris to Spain (or perhaps the other way around, i’m not sure), Camino trail I believe it’s called. (I couldn’t be more fucking proud of her). The only friend missing that eve was Hyewon, in which we were drinking with the night before. It’s funny, a lot of Koreans pick up certain accents and mannerisms from all learning English from the same places- but these four share a few mannerisms completely different to others, ones i’ve grown very accustom too and truly make up a part of their personalities. A very generous and kind four i’ve been happy to know these past few years.
So as it comes to it, this was not really only my final days left in Seoul but theirs, as a group, too. I have much respect for the four- friends from university and well beyond. Everyone always leaves New Zealand, so it’s really no different but I didn’t really think that people would want to escape from Seoul as well (“who would want to leave Seoul?? It’s amazing!” the wanderlust, romantic, idealistic version of me says). It seems a time where everyone is beginning to make tracks, and i’m infinitely proud of them for doing so and undertaking such scary adventures. As i’m always reminded, 회자정리 거자필반(會者定離 去者必返), friends will inevitably meet again.
So these are final days in Seoul (for now).
This time round i’ve been swapping between digital and film, so none of my photographs are consistent enough for considered blog posts.. instead i’ve taken a mix of shots of the past couple days and combined them across two posts (this being the first). A lot went down while I was there- mostly meeting friends, a lot of drinking, visiting Sosongs cafe ‘Yellow Dakuan”, an exhibition with Novo and meeting Ruby’s friend from Germany! A messy mix of photos below..
A return to Novo one more time. I write this days later on the eve of my departure, it feels like this trip is closing a chapter (temporarily). Like I said earlier, tattoos with meaning always go without saying, but i’ll never admit or at least bother to explain. It’s mine, and those that are involved to know.
Seulbi took me to see Novo’s studio in Anguk, meeting up with Yura, ShimJeong (sp?) and Hyerim again. You build up the hype before it’s about to get done, but after realising that it’s not that bad there are always certain ..speed bumps.. that fuck you up again. Dinner, a bit of maekju and an early night.
Seoul delivers again.
I sat down with Yun the owner of Covernat yesterday for a lunch meet. It’s always a pleasure to visit the Yun and the store- I think it’s a rare to find a store quite like this. Over lunch he told me he wasn’t fond of the city, hence Covernat not being on the main drag in Garosu-gil (Gangnam). Instead the flagship store is hidden a little further south from Sinsa station in a villa styled house, the perfect atmosphere. I picked up a pair of Dickies x Covernat pants (to post later) and with the new collection ‘Indigo Blossom’ rolling out I thought i’d take a few shots over the store.
Seoul begins like no other, but strangely enough.. it’s consistent. Last year I arrived with a big night full of beer, vomiting and crashing on friends floors- this time was a similar occurrence. Makgeolli (korean rice wine) and friends crashing on my ..well bed. A step up from the floor, but three in a bed is certainly an uncomfortable situation.
There’s always much I miss about this place. Being winter is a whole new experience.. my vocabulary mostly consists of trading 존나 더워 for 존나 추워. It’s fucking hot/It’s fucking cold. Although a lot has changed, the staples are still the same. Unfortunately Namoo bar is gone, as well as Antidote store in Hongdae but my favourite Bap place in Hapjeong is still here as well as a lot of my friends too. Timing couldn’t be better.
The past two nights have been meeting up with old and new friends. Seulbi and her friend Minkyu, to seeing old friends like Kyuhee and Yura. There is warmth in my tummy, i’m pretty sure it’s happiness (or beer).
