This is a beautiful book. Friends, and happy newly wed couple (and parents to be) released this book a couple weeks ago. It’s a collection of photography by You-rim Kim, and tattoo work by Novo Korea Warrior. They have a dynamic working relationship I hope to have with someone one day, which results in the documentation of life in Korea as an artist.

You can get copies in Seoul from Novo directly, or for those less fortunate to be out of South Korea (and lacking in Korean skills) you could send me a line via email, here and i’ll see what I can do.

Little preview of the book below.

I Live With A Heavy Heart

Art School.

It’s often people come to me to talk about the strains and stress of life.. both from work, school and relationships. It makes me think, a lot, and often about the obstacles we fall short on. Lately i’ve been thinking of returning to art school, something i’ve dismissed in recent years for numerous reasons- but the more I think about it, the more i’ve learnt to grow from being there. I’ve fought the system, i’ve tried to control with it, i’ve run with it and at in the end I just did what I wanted to do.. and from there you’ll find your place.

Providence and Rhode Island School of Design

/Nature Lab

Today I took a day trip away from New York, a good 8 hours on bus total, to Providence, Rhode Island. I had a meeting set up there with the current Head of Photography for the MFA Photo program at RISD, Steven Smith, as well as a new student into the MFA program, Frances Denny (who I must say is the nicest, most welcoming, friendly person i’ve met here in America so far). Frances and Steve talked me through the MFA Program, outlining its courses, thesis, expectations, TA and anything else you might want to know. One thing I found interesting about their program is the joint classes you can take with Brown University (the campuses are literally right next to each other) and the ‘Winter Session’ (which from my understanding is like Summer School) in which you can take classes that you wouldn’t normally find yourself taking during the semester due to time constraints and pressure to produce work. They have classes like glass blowing, creative writing for your thesis, art as a profession (I think it’s called- you go to galleries and studios in New York) and so many more.. which sounds incredible to supplement both your studio and theoretical practice while you’re there.

The city itself is a strange, after being in New York, I had expected it to be similar.. yet it was a weird mix of large buildings and quiet streets. The place is beautiful and filled with youths (from the two universities obviously) but so much of a change and a nice breather to be able to sit on the side of the street and take a rest rather than the hustle and bustle of getting from A to B like New York has.

Frances also showed me the Nature Lab, which I think is where RISD is starting to outshine the other programs- besides its photographic facilities (which are pretty thorough), it also has so much more to offer. The Nature Lab is by far my favourite- a room full of both human and animal skeletons, taxidermy animals, live Snakes and Chinchillas (? I think it was a Chinchilla), digital microscopes to view slides of ..all sorts of things! The best part is- a lot of what you see in there, can also be taken out on loan. Incredible isn’t it?

I’ve learnt a lot about the school, and the other programs from prospective students, so it’s quite interesting to see how an MFA could sculpt my current work.. the big question is whether or not i’d be ready. I’ll be following the school closely from now on though, and definitely start reading and actively producing work again.

Frames

01.Homestead Framers
100 Railside Ave
Henderson
Auckland

02.John Leech Framing Workshop
13 Tawari St
Kingsland
Auckland

If I could recommend two places to get works framed, it’d be the two on the left. I won’t go into detail, i’ll let you decide if you ever need to get work done. I’ve been gearing up for the new exhibition, having a hard time deciding on framing.. and soon i’ll have even a harder time working out hanging compositions (oh god).. Auckland Photography Festival have graciously allowed me to create an exhibition featuring images I wanted show together, so it’s a mixed bunch of old and new works. The exhibition opens June 9th. A small facebook event will go up for the opening, so just keep posted here.

Rachel

Thanks to Numi and Sunny I got to meet quite a few talented people in Seoul.. from FG crews, tattoo artists, designers, and actors. Many of which have become friends that will certainly last a life time. One in particular is an amazing friend, even looked after me (brought me chocolates, took me to dinner) when I f’d my ankle.. Rachel 레이첼아 (Sounion) is a graphic designer/video director/person extraordinaire behind a camera/computer/brush/pen and was kind of enough to send me a hand drawn magazine she made during a workshop with Sam Weber.

9 hand drawn images in a fold out booklet that turns into a poster as well. 16 copies were made in total ^_^

A little flick through the magazine and a music video of hers below.

Stare death in the face. Pecha Kucha!

01.

02.

01 & 02. Cellphone pictures from Frank and Ivy

I spoke at Pecha Kucha last night. It was really an amazing experience despite how long I had been cringing standing up in front of so many people. Full house, completely packed out, nothing scarier than so many eyes. Peter Evans told me to only look at the smiling faces, I thought that was a really great thing- better than picturing them naked. The other speakers were amazing, I really enjoyed them (or as much as I could take in with my brain on fire thinking about my own demise). There were no set rules for the talks, so every one had their own take on how to present themselves/what to present. I thought that was best.

Pecha Kucha 26 was held at Hopetoun Alpha, a really amazing elegant hall, and this particular event was put on by Photoforum. My talk went well, I think. Nerves definitely get the best of you sometimes, being the only speech i’ve done since primary school I am happy I didn’t wet myself on stage. Although I was trying to talk into the light stand instead of the microphone for the first little bit.. oops (they were both black objects coming out of the podium). That little mishap and about half way through (not knowing the order of my slides) I thought I was way behind and decided to pick up the pace..instead I ended a good 40-60 seconds early!

One really lovely part of tonight was talking to a young lady afterwards (whose name I have forgotten, sorry) who approached me afterwards and said really nice things about my words (not the work), and how she was a physicist and how it related to her, how her thoughts were on parr with mine. I also got to finally put names to faces with Edith Amituanai, John Lyall and met some other wonderful photographers too. Yvonne Todd was there too, but I didn’t manage to talk to her again (probably a good thing, but I’m always down for second chances. Possibly thirds and fourths). Thanks friends who came. Anna and Ruby for helping me write my speech too.

I look forward to my next public speaking endeavor. Hopefully not too soon.

Bad dark photos afterwards.
